On February 19, 1983, at 3 A.M., a general alarm fire destroyed the Onofrio Building at the corner of West Washington and Mechanic Streets. Police officers on patrol discovered the rear of the building fully involved. First arriving firefighters found more than ten people standing on the second and third floor porches that needed rescued. Ground ladders were used to successfully remove these people without injury. Engines 1, 2 and 3, and the aerial were used at the scene. City firefighters used 2,250 feet of 2 ½ inch hose, 600 feet of 1 ½ inch hose and 60 feet of ground ladders. The extension ladder of Engine 2 was destroyed when the side wall collapsed. Firefighter John Rimer suffered a broken foot when it was caught in the aerial ladder as it was being extended. The Bradford Township Volunteer Fire Department responded with three engines and used 1,500 feet of 3 inch hose, 1,150 feet of 2 ½ inch hose, 50 feet of 1 ½ inch hose and 35 feet of ladders. The Lewis Run Volunteer Fire Department responded with one engine and used 350 feet of 4 inch hose and 250 feet of 2 ½ inch hose. The Derrick City Volunteer Fire Department stood by at the East Bradford Station.
