On Monday, March 3, 1986, a fire at 12:10 A.M. destroyed a building at the corner of Main and Webster Streets. The Bradford City Fire Department was dispatched and a general alarm was soon requested. Bradford Township was requested to send Engine 155 with the air cascade system to the scene. Six firefighters assisted at the scene while others stood-by at the Custer City and West Branch stations. Destroyed in the fire were Monago’s Floor and Wall Covering, Inc., and Morgan Optical located on the first floor. On the second floor above Monago’s were offices occupied by the Eastern Oil and Gas Company, Northwest Legal Services and the Pennsylvania Oil and Gas Association. Located above Morgan Optical was the reading classroom of St. Bernard School. Bradford City firefighters were on the scene for nine hours. Bradford City Fire Chief Frank Frontino said State Police Fire Marshal William McQuay would investigate the cause of the fire. It was later determined that the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction. The building was built in the 1880’s, and was the former Applebee and Fisher Building, which was originally occupied by an oil well supply company.
