On Saturday, September 1, 1973, fire heavily damaged the Casey Cole Chevrolet auto dealership. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and heat trying to battle the fire inside the one story metal building. The fire was concentrated in the service and parts departments of the building. Assistant Fire Chief Ervin Abers stated that the fire started when employees opened an overhead door to vent fumes from a floor cleaning solvent. A spark from the motor on the electric door opener apparently ignited the fumes. Mutual aid was received from the Lewis Run and Limestone, NY, Volunteer Fire Departments. Firefighters were on the scene for five hours. Damage was estimated at $100,000.
