Lafayette Motel ~ Lafayette Township

On Friday, August 25, 1979, a 3:55 A.M. fire destroyed the Lafayette Motel located on Route 219, south of Lewis Run. The Lewis Run Volunteer Fire Department was first to arrive on scene and found the structure fully involved. Mutual aid was requested from Bradford Township, Lafayette Township and Hilltop Volunteer Fire Departments. The Corydon Township and Mt. Jewett Volunteer Fire Departments were on standby. Firefighters were hampered by a limited water supply, with the nearest water supply to fill tankers being in Lewis Run. A total of 75 firefighters operated seven pumpers and four tankers to fight the fire. Firemen were on the scene for over six hours. There were no injuries. Lewis Run Fire Chief Joseph Hinaman directed firefighting operations. All occupants of the motel units, including part-owner Herman DeCasper and his family, escaped without injury. Damage was estimated at $200,000. State Police Fire Marshall William McQuay investigated. The motel was 25 years old.
